Project Overview<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The project \u201cDesign of an Open-Source MES Platform with an Add-On Marketplace\u201d aimed to develop a modular Manufacturing Execution System (MES) platform specifically targeted at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main areas of focus were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Market and competitive analysis of the MES market<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • design of a modular software architecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • development of a platform business model<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • integration of an add-on marketplace<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
    \n\n\n\n

    Initial Situation<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

    Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) play a central role in digital production and serve as an interface between ERP systems and the automation level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    However, the market is characterized by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • highly generalized solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • high complexity of existing systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • a strong focus on large enterprises<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • limited modularity<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • insufficient specialization for SMEs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular face challenges related to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • implementation effort<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • limited flexibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • lack of adaptability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
        \n\n\n\n

        Approach & Methodology<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

        The project was carried out as part of the course \u201cAnalysis of Business Processes and Design of IT Systems (A&K)\u201d at the University of Potsdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The methodological approach included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • market analysis (including a Competitive Intelligence approach)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • target group analysis with a focus on SMEs in the DACH region<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • SWOT analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • development of an overall strategic concept<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • design of the software architecture<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • development of a platform business model<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • conducting and evaluating a survey in the MES environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          The platform requirements were based, among other sources, on the VDI 5600 guideline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n\n\n\n

          Key Findings<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

          The market analysis and survey results showed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          • high relevance of data collection, quality management, and detailed production planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • price, functionality, and quality as the most important purchasing criteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • preference for a subscription-based business model<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • strong demand for modular and flexibly integrable systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • growth potential in the SME segment of the DACH region<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            At the same time, it became apparent that many existing systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              \n
            • operate as isolated solutions<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • cause media discontinuities<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • are insufficiently integrated<\/li>\n\n\n\n
            • have high barriers to entry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
              \n\n\n\n

              Target Concept & Results<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

              Based on the analysis, an open-source MES platform was designed with the following core elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • modular architecture with flexibly combinable functional modules<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • add-on marketplace for external developers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • centralized data foundation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • support for key MES functional areas (incl. order management, data collection, quality management, detailed production planning, energy management)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
              • platform business model based on a subscription structure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                The add-on marketplace enables:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  \n
                • development of custom modules<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • monetization of third-party extensions<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • a service-fee model<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                • development of an ecosystem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
                  \n\n\n\n

                  Added Value & Knowledge Transfer<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

                  The project demonstrates how methods from business informatics can be successfully combined:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  • strategic market analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • business model development<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • software architecture design<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                  • platform economics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                    The developed platform specifically addresses SMEs in the manufacturing sector within the DACH region and offers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                    • high flexibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • scalability<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • cost transparency<\/li>\n\n\n\n
                    • innovation potential through open extensibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

                      The project therefore contributes to the digital transformation of manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
